When is the right time for children to peak educationally? Is it when they’re taking their finals at University, at A levels or as a friend recently said to me at common entrance? After all that determines what happens thereafter. Personally I think it’s about nurturing, supporting and encouraging children right the way through, hoping that things come to fruition with A levels or the bacalaureat. After all this qualification is the golden ticket to further education should they wish to use it at any stage in their lives.

When we moved back from France I discovered lots of mothers getting their knickers in a twist over common entrance. I suspected at the time that it was about the school, the bigger the name the higher the stress. It was all a little dramatic, after all there was another five years of education to go. It’s turned out since then that a lot of the children who had pressure too early have not fulfilled their expected potential, whereas, the children who didn’t have!! As a friend of my sons said the other day ” isn’t it funny that the two thickest boys at prep school got the the grades for their chosen Uni’s). As it turns out they were the only ones…
